Safety Starts with Me

Riding Bikes in Park

The City of Fife, in partnership with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, is taking measures to reduce accidents and increase responsible behavior and awareness on city streets.

"Safety Starts With Me" is an ongoing campaign to promote safe driving, walking and cycling in our city.

New walker, roller safety signs

You may notice some new educational signage at two of our city’s parks. When walking or rolling through Brookville Gardens Park or Dacca Park you can spot ten signs aimed to inform motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists about rules of the road, safety tips and best practices. These signs are funded by a grant the city received from the Traffic Safety Commission to help increase safety, awareness and knowledge for our residents and park users. Be sure to visit our parks and check them out!

Safety Videos

Check out some PSA videos below.

Crosswalk Safety

Pedestrians:

  • Always cross at marked crosswalks
  • Obey any pedestrian signals and look left-right-left
  • If a vehicle approaches, make eye contact with the driver
  • Look before walking past stopped vehicles
  • Remember that bicyclists are not considered pedestrians

Helmet Safety

wear a helmet:

  • Helmets should be worn during every ride, no matter how short
  • For children younger than 12 years, consider wearing a helmet for sledding or other similar sports
  • A new helmet should be purchased following a crash

Driving Safety

DRIVE DISTRACTION FREE:

  • Plan ahead- schedule 10 minutes before you hit the road to take care of things that could distract you
  • Set it and forget it- set your phone to 'do not disturb'
  • Out of reach, out of mind- put your phone physically out of reach
  • Take a break- build in breaks for longer trips to use your phone
