911 for kids
Coloring Sheet for Kids
Seconds count during an emergency. Everyone needs to use 911 properly to get quick help during a fire, medical emergency or a crime. This is especially true for children. They can and should be taught how to correctly use the 911 system to save a life.
Do's
- Whenever possible, call from a safe location. If the house is on fire, get out first and then call from a nearby telephone.
- Know your full name and address. Always post your full address and home phone number near the phone where it can be located in an emergency.
- Remember to stay calm as possible, listen to the questions and answer out loud so the 911 operator is able to get all the needed information to get you the best help as quickly as possible.
- Stay on the phone until the 911 operator, a fire fighter on scene, or a police officer on scene has told you to hang up.
- If 911 is called by mistake, stay on the line and tell the operator it was an accident. If you hang up, emergency personnel will be sent to your location needlessly.
Do Not's
- Do NOT call 911 as a joke or a prank. You can get into serious trouble. More importantly, you could delay someone else from getting help they need in an emergency.
- Never hang up on 911; neither before the 911 operator answers or until the 911 operator, a fire fighter on scene, or a police officer on scene has told you to hang up.
- Do NOT call 911 for noisy neighbors, loud music, or barking dogs. Call the non-emergency telephone number. In Fife and Milton is 922-6633 ext. 1.

What is 9-1-1?
Nine-one-one is the number to call to get help in a police, fire or medical emergency. A 9-1-1 call is transmitted over dedicated phone lines to the emergency agency (police, fire, sheriff) assigned to the city or area you are calling from. Trained dispatchers then send emergency help as needed. |
What does 9-1-1 Do?
A nine-one-one call will automatically dispatch you to a trained professional who will answer your call, ask you to describe your emergency situation and route the necessary emergency personnel to your location to assist you. |

How do I dial 9-1-1
- On a landline/house phone or pay phone:
- What is a landline/house phone?
- Landline Phones come in many different styles
- The one thing that they have in common is that they must be plugged into a phone jack to operate
- Most landline phones are push button, however older phones have dial pads
- In addition there are many portable phones which may look like a wireless phone. The portable landline/house phone must have power so if there is no electricity, this particular phone will not work
- Try identifying all the phones your family uses and figure out if they are a landline phone or a wireless phone
- What about Pay Phones?
- Pay phones are located in public places and have push buttons. Older ones have a dial
- How do I dial 9-1-1?
- Stay calm
- Make sure you know the exact location and address of the emergency. If the address is unknown, the name of the complex, or neighboring businesses are helpful
- Pick up the receiver or turn on the phone and wait for the DIAL TONE
- Dial or press "9", then "1", and then "1" again
- Wait for the ring and the 9-1-1 dispatcher will answer
- On a wireless phone:
- Some of the other names people use for a wireless phone is a cellular, mobile, or car phone
- Remember a wireless phone is not the same as a portable phone you might have at home
- There are many different types of wireless phones
- Never practice calling 9-1-1 on a real phone
- Remember you don't need any money to call 9-1-1 on any pay phone
|
What do I say?
- Stay calm, speak clearly and be prepared with as much information as possible regarding the emergency when the dispatcher asks you.
- Listen carefully to the dispatcher's questions and answer each question carefully
- The dispatcher cannot see your hand or head gestures, signs or motions, so answer all questions out loud
- Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you it is OK to do so
- Follow the instructions of the dispatcher
- Remember to remain calm and follow the dispatcher's instructions
- If it's not safe for you to talk, but you are having an emergency and need assistance, you can dial 9-1-1 and then just set the phone down, help will be on the way
