Qualifications
This is a list of qualifications for all Civil Service positions in the City of Fife Police Department.

All Applicants
  1. Must be a citizen of the United States who can read and write the English language.
  2. Must have a high school diploma (or GED). 
  3. Examination notices shall contain a minimum age. An individual may qualify to take the entrance examination for a classification which has a minimum age of 21 providing the individual will turn 21 during the life of the eligibility list.
  4. Applicant must pass a background investigation including an interview, polygraph, and psychological exam.

Process
Application Process:
Anyone meeting the minimum qualifications may apply for open positions. Applicants are available only when eligibility lists are being established. Positions that are currently open are listed on the City of Fife website. When applying, carefully read the announcement and submit ALL required/ requested forms and information by the closing date and time.

Exams:
Applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to the exam. The exam process varies with each classification. Entry level Police and Entry Level Corrections Officer positions require a physical agility test.

Oral Board Review:
Applicants who pass ALL testing will be invited to interview with our Oral Board. Successful applicants will be ranked on the eligibility register based on their combined total exam score.

Certification of Eligibility Register:
The Eligibility Register will be Certified by the Civil Service Commission and this Certified Eligibility Register will be valid for 12 months.

Background Investigation Process:
When a vacancy exists, the Police Department requests the top three names on the Certified Eligibility Register. Prior to appointment, an applicant must successfully complete a thorough Police Department background investigation. The background investigation may consist of, but not limited to:

  1. Personal History Statement:
  2. Personal History Check including an interview as well as criminal, credit, and reference checks.
  3. Polygraph and psychological tests.
Hiring:
Those candidates successfully completing the back ground investigation will be interviewed, and the hiring authority selects one to hire. Appointment is contingent upon passing a medical examination.
